I spend a fair amount of time in this world, and there are two discoveries i can relate quickly.

Positions:  Sorry non-sports people but I'm going to use sports analogies here... Positions, think of a football player, his title is Football Player - however he plays numerous positions: on offence he plays center, on defense he plays linebacker, on punts he is long-snapper, on kick off he is right wing, on receiving he is right second line. On the leadership team he is Co-Captain... those are his positions...

Many folk i work with get stuck in the quick sand of thinking and talking about people's jobs, even sinking deeper and using the proper name of the person instead of talking about the position. 

Accountability and Responsibility Pairs:  These two words are easy to confuse. But in any situation where there is management involved the two words become crystal clear. The "manager" is accountable - the subordinate is responsible.  Positions we help the people we work with make this very clear, we ask the question, is the position SMART?

S - Specific - Is the position description clear, specfic?
M - Measurable - How will we know if it is "done"?
A - Accountable - Who is, and what are they accountable for?
R - Responsible - Who is and what is it?
T - Time - What are the time expectations and duties?

"Smart Positions" with clear Smart roles yield Discipline and Accountability. Yep, Homer Simpson like... easy and simple... yet not simplistic.
